Bird count...

Here’s one for Murphy. You know Murphy, of Murphy’s Law. This week-end I am participating in the Great Back Yard Bird Count. I have wanted to do this for several years now, but I kept forgetting. I finally remembered, so, here I am, all ready to count birds, and what do you know…

Of course, the bird count wasn’t last week-end or the week-end before, when tons of birds were on my deck. (Well, maybe not tons, because birds don’t weigh very much, but you get what I mean.) Dozens and dozens of the adorable little things showed up in the freezing cold and snow to eat the sunflower seeds I threw out for them. Over the past several weeks, I have seen Titmice, Chickadees, Juncos, Purple Finches, Gold Finches, a Towhee, Bluebirds, Cardinals, Sparrows and Blue Jays.

But, this week-end, when I could be officially counting them, not very many birds are showing up. And I think maybe I know why.

When it was snowy and very, very chilly, my cats were being wimps and hiding from the cold. Now, though, when it is a little warmer, they are out and about and hanging around their favorite places. Including the deck. And, consequently, scaring away my cute little birds.

Have a beautiful day!

You are making our cats look bad.

I am a birdwatcher, also, as is my cat. We both admire them at the feeders, but maybe our motivations are a bit different. I always love to see the little tracks in the snow. I didn't do the backyard count this year even though most of my birdwatching is in my yard since I've reached a certain age and have to lug around an oxygen tank. I have figured out how to garden with oxygen, however. I tell Joe that I will keep gardening if I have to crawl.

Love the picture of Luka's paw...in fact, it has become my new desktop background. Simply brilliant.

Don't worry, because I did the GBBC for you here- since we have so much snow, my cat is 'hibernating' and I have seen a lot more at the feeders than usual.

(I am the anonymous who posted about the primula scent too, sorry I forgot to sign it.)

JWalsh - Thank you for your comment! :) I didn't receive a comment from an anonymous about the primula scent; it must have gotten lost in cyberspace. Another reader said that she posted comments that didn't show up, either, so I don't know what happened!

JWalsh - This is my second comment oops of the morning! I did receive that comment! I am sorry! I was thinking it from someone else who reads my blog because it showed up at the same time as a comment she posted. I guess I was confused! :) Thank you, though, for letting me know it was you! :) About the primula scent - (I already told this to the other lady who I thought asked the question) - if you stick your nose in it, it is fragrant, but it doesn't fill the room with scent, like some other flowers do.

O.K., Anonymous, who are you and how do you know that that is Luca's paw? I agree - it is a brilliant picture! :)

Well, so much for my anonymity....some posts I have signed JWalsh and some Janice! :-)

Thank you for answering about the scent of the primula. When I worked for a grower, one of my superiors had the job of developing new strains. We got to vote on which ones we liked best, and I picked the ones with the most scent. I miss being able to walk into the greenhouses at primrose time.
