Several weeks ago, I found this cute little thing marked "clearance" at one of the box stores. It sits on my kitchen window sill, complete with the small blue saucer I added. I think that even if it doesn't bloom for me, it is still very charming. Oh, by the way, that's not my window sill in the picture, in case you were wondering; it is the beginning of another stone wall I am building.
This is my first orchid, unless you count my Bletilla, a ground orchid. The plant tag says it is a Mini-Oncidium, with no cultivar name listed. I really don't much at all about growing orchids, but you have to start somewhere, right? Even though I've read a little bit about them, if you grow orchids and have any tips for me, I'd be glad to have them.
Have a beautiful day!

We too found an orchid on clearance when my dad was here visiting. He had just started working with them (with his very green thumb) this past year. He told me to buy orchid food and feed it the orchid food in 4 oz. of water once a week. He also said to drain off the extra water after feeding it. I pour the excess into the bottom of my african violet container. The orchid bloomed after the first feeding! Our house is humid so we wait for the moss to dry out a bit before watering it so it doesn't need it exactly every 7 days. Yours looks like a different type. So, I don't know what particulars there may be. :) It is very beautiful.

Well, it’s 7 months since your post. Has your orchid survived? Did you discover its name? The leaves look exactly like mine (my first orchid). It was the week before Christmas when I bought it. It was flowering and the flowers were nearly spent. I’ve since snipped off the flower stem but I believe the flowers were a combination of pink, a brownish red, white and yellow. Has yours bloomed?
Yes, my orchid has survived. Um, no, I haven't discovered its name. :) I DO have the plant tag around here somewhere, though! It hasn't bloomed. I think right now it is probably a little chilly by the kitchen window. I need to start feeding it and see if I can get it to bloom. That would be so cool! :)
